8/31/2007, #74, 3rd Quarter 2007

Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of me this night, for it is written: 'I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' "But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee." (Mark 14:27-28)
Jesus, thank you for going before us.

Peter said to him, "Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be." Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." (Mark 14:29-30)
Lord, you know our weakness better than we know it ourselves. Please help us receive your Holy Spirit with power into our lives more and more each day so that your strength will abide in us even when we are weak.

But he spoke more vehemently, "If I have to die with you, I will not deny you!"
And they all said likewise. (Mark 14:31)
Father, thank you for the faithfulness of Holy Scripture: it shows us clearly our human condition, sin and weakness and your love and faithfulness. Thank you for your grace and mercy.

Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and he said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." (Mark 14:32)
Holy Spirit, please help us enter into Jesus' life of prayer.

And he took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be troubled and deeply distressed. Then he said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." (Mark 14:33-34)
Holy Spirit, please help us to be steady, watch and pray along with Jesus. He ever lives to make intercession for us, help us intercede for others.

He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will." (Mark 14:35-36)
Dad, please help us enter into your will for us.

Then he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Mark 14:37-38)
Jesus, please help us watch with you in prayer.

Again he went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. And when he returned, he found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer him. (Mark 14:39-40)
Father, have mercy on us for we so often fail you son.

Then he came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand." (Mark 14:41-42)
Lord have mercy on your church, for your betrayers are at hand and many are shepherds of the flock. Bring us to the place where we all can say, "Not my will be done, but yours."

A word received: I AM speaking; who is listening? Pray for listening ears and hearts. Pray that my people will heed my word.

Friday: 16, 17; 1 Kings 5:1-6:1,7; Acts 28:1-16; Mark 14:27-42
Saturday: 20, 21:1-7(8-14); 1 Kings 7:51-8:21; Acts 28:17-31; Mark 14:43-52

Subject: The Welcome Home Initiative
From: Nigel Mumford
Dear prayer warriors,
I ask your continued prayers for "The Welcome Home Initiative"
We hope to run the first retreat for returning veterans from Iraq in November. The pilot gathering will be for military chaplains. Then, early next year we plan to run the program monthly. We ask for your prayers as we put this program together. My prayer is that this will be a diocese initiative and we will need help from many. The needs will be let known soon.
Please help us to help those returning from combat...
If your soul is "quickened" perhaps you might let us know how you might help... please reply to healing@ctkcenter.org
      Thank you for your prayers....
The organizing group:
The Rt. Rev David Bena (Col.(Rt). Marine/Air force)
      Lt. Col (Rt) Noel Dawes
      Col. K. Love (adviser)
