10/16/2007, #18, 4th Quarter 2007

Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words which Baruch had written at the instruction of Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying: (Jeremiah 36:27)
LORD, the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church have shown the same contempt for your word that Jehoiakim king of Judah had.

"Take yet another scroll, and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned." (Jeremiah 36:28)
Holy Spirit, please help us persevere as Jeremiah and Baruch did in speaking your word.

"And you shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, 'Thus says the LORD: "You have burned this scroll, saying, 'Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and cause man and beast to cease from here?'"'" (Jeremiah 36:29)
LORD, your word is true and unless the leaders, teachers, and people of the Episcopal Church repent and humble themselves before you, we too will be devastated.

"'Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: "He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night."'" (Jeremiah 36:30)
Lord Jesus, have mercy on us, for the Episcopal Church is facing a day of judgment.

"'"I will punish him, his family, and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah all the doom that I have pronounced against them; but they did not heed."'" (Jeremiah 36:31)
Father, your word is true; have mercy on us.

Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the instruction of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And besides, there were added to them many similar words. (Jeremiah 36:32)
Holy Spirit, thank you that Jeremiah was willing to keep listening in the face of Jehoiakim's intransigence; please help us keep listening to you in spite of the intransigence of the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church.

Now King Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the LORD which He spoke by the prophet Jeremiah. (Jeremiah 37:1-2)
Lord Jesus, have mercy on us for we too are heedless in our day. Thank you for your mercy.
