10/30/2007, #33, 4th Quarter 2007
On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. And great multitudes were gathered together to him, so that he got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. (Matthew 13:1-2)
Holy Spirit, we pray that Jesus will be preached from every pulpit in this diocese. So fill the preaching with your presence that multitudes will be drawn to Jesus.
Then he spoke many things to them in parables, saying: "Behold, a sower went out to sow." (Matthew 13:3)
Jesus, please help me sow seeds for your kingdom.
"And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them." (Matthew 13:4)
Jesus, you scatter your seeds broadcast. Some will never respond to the gospel. Please don't let me be distracted from sowing because of that.
"Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away." (Matthew 13:5-6)
Father, only you can provide the depth of soil to carry us through the scorching times -- we look to you to provide for all our needs.
"And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them." (Matthew 13:7)
Jesus, stop me from being someone else's thorn. Please help me to assist people in growing in you; don't let me impede their growth.
"But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." (Matthew 13:8)
Lord Jesus, please help me yield up a good crop to you. Help me by your Spirit to recognize good soil and plant there. Thank you.
"He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" (Matthew 13:9)
Father, I want to hearken to everything Jesus is saying to me; please help me do that. Thank you.
