1/31/2008, #33, 1st Quarter 2008

I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the Father who sent me. (John 5:30)
      Father, please bring us to that same place where Jesus was: where we will judge only by what we hear from your Holy Spirit, and where we will seek your will and not our own.

Therefore, when he came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you had no pleasure. Then I said, 'Behold, I have come--in the volume of the book it is written of me--to do your will, O God.'" (Hebrews 10:5-7 [Psalm 40:6-8])
      Jesus, we pray that it will be written of us that we have come to do your will. All our offerings and sacrifices are of no value unless we have offered ourselves to you and have been covered and washed clean by the sacrifice of your blood. Help us turn to you throughout this diocese to do your will.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before me and be blameless. (Genesis 17:1)
      Holy Spirit, bring us forth to walk humbly and blamelessly before you at the Diocesan Convention.

And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly." (Genesis 17:2)
      Father please help us to be a holy people who keep your covenant. Let your Holy Spirit move through the preparations for the Diocesan Convention and bring his life to the worship, the healing ministry, the workshops, the meditations, the youth's and children's ministries, the speakers, the Camp of the Woods staff, and all that makes up the Diocesan Convention.

Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, (Genesis 17:3)
      LORD, please bring us to this place of awe and worship that you brought Abraham, and we will hear you talking with us. Thank you.

Words received for Sunday School lesson 20, February 17th

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
      A word received: I want you to have my power so that you can be my witness. You need the help of my Holy Spirit -- the helper -- to be an effective witness of what I have done. I have not left you orphans; I have given you a Spirit of adoption by whom you can cry out, "Abba, Father." (From Romans 8:15)

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. (Romans 8:16)
      A word received: Seek my Holy Spirit; invite him in. I want every one of your to know that you are a child of my father.

Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. (Romans 8:17)
      A word received: Don't be afraid. I have not given you a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (From 2 Timothy 1:7) These are all blessings from my Holy Spirit. With my Holy Spirit in you with his power you need not be afraid. There is no height nor depth nor anything that can separate you from my love. I will always love you: come to me, let me fill you up.

Prayer: Lord, please show me what you are asking of me.

Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what he sees the Father do; for whatever he does, the Son also does in like manner." (John 5:19)
      Holy Spirit, you made us children of God by adoption; please help us move towards that son-ship relationship that Jesus has with his father.

"For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does; and he will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel." (John 5:20)
      Jesus, send us out preaching everywhere, and bless your work through us and confirm your word with accompanying signs. (From Mark 16:20)

"For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom he will." (John 5:21)
      Jesus, in your mercy give your new life to the leaders, teachers, and people of the Episcopal Church.

"For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son," (John 5:22)
      LORD, you take no pleasure in the death of anyone (From Ezekiel 18:32); prepare our hearts for the day when the wheat will be separated from the chaff.

"that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him." (John 5:23)
      Holy Spirit, please help us by our words, our deeds, and our thoughts to bring honor to you, to the Father, and to the Son. Thank you.

For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (Hebrews 9:13-14)
      Father, our heart's desire is to serve you. Please cleanse our consciences from all dead works so that we may serve you through the power of your Holy Spirit. Thank you.

Then he brought him outside and said, "Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them." And he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he believed in the LORD, and he accounted it to him for righteousness. (Genesis 15:5-6)
      Father, please help us believe your word to us so that we are established in your righteousness.

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in his holy mountain. (Psalm 48:1)
      Father, thank you for the joy of being able to praise you; thank you for bringing us to that holy city -- the New Jerusalem. Thank you.

1/28/2008, #30, 1st Quarter 2008

You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those all around us. (Psalm 44:13)
      Lord Jesus, the Episcopal Church has defiled the covenant you have made with your people; have mercy on us.

You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. (Psalm 44:14)
      Holy Spirit, our pride has brought us low; have mercy on us.

My dishonor is continually before me, and the shame of my face has covered me, (Psalm 44:15)
      Father, the Episcopal Church has sought the honor and praise of the world. We have not sought the honor that comes only from you; have mercy on us.

Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger. (Psalm 44:16)
      All this has come upon us; but we have forgotten you, and we have dealt falsely with your covenant. LORD, save us from the evil one; have mercy on us.

A word received: You are in my care. I will refresh you. Look to me for renewal.

Monday: 44; Genesis 14:(1-7)8-24; Hebrews 8:1-13; John 4:43-54
Tuesday: 47, 48; Genesis 15:1-11,17-21; Hebrews 9:1-14; John 5:1-18

"Remember the prisoners as if chained with them--those who are mistreated--since you yourselves are in the body also." Hebrews 13:3
      O GOD, who spares when we deserve punishment, and in your wrath remembers mercy; we humbly beseech you, of your goodness, to comfort and succour all prisoners [especially those who are condemned to die]. Give them a right understanding of themselves, and of your promises; that, trusting wholly in your mercy, they may not place their confidence anywhere but in you. Relieve the distressed, protect the innocent, awaken the guilty; and forasmuch as you alone bring light out of darkness, and good out of evil, grant to these your servants, that by the power of your Holy Spirit they may be set free from the chains of sin and death, and may be brought to newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

1/27/2008, #29, 1st Quarter 2008

Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, he came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. (Mark 7:31)
      Jesus, please come wherever the Episcopal Church is and travel through its parishes and dioceses.

Then they brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged him to put his hand on him. (Mark 7:32)
      Jesus, we bring you the Episcopal Church, it has grown deaf to your word and has an impediment in its speech so that it no longer proclaims the gospel. We beg you to put your hand on it.

And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers in his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. (Mark 7:33)
      Jesus, please take us aside and put your finger in our ears and on our tongue (spit if necessary!).

Then, looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." (Mark 7:34)
      Lord, please speak that same word to the Episcopal Church. Open our hearts, our minds, and our spirits to your word.

Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. (Mark 7:35)
      Jesus, we long for the day when the ears of the Episcopal Church are opened, and the impediment that keeps it from proclaiming the gospel will be loosed, and the church will speak plainly according to the mind of your Spirit.

Then he commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more he commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. (Mark 7:36)
      Jesus, please help us discern the times for speaking and times for keeping silent. Show us when and how to speak and help us be obedient to your guidance.

And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak." (Mark 7:37)
      Jesus, you do all things well and we trust you to transform the life of the Episcopal Church. Thank you.

But he, because he continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. (Hebrews 7:24)
      Jesus, please bring your faithfulness and stability to the clergy and bishops of the Episcopal Church.

Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through him, (Hebrews 7:25a)
      Holy Spirit, guide the people of the Episcopal Church to God the Father through Jesus Christ.

since he ever lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25b)
      Jesus, please help us join with you day by day in your ministry of intercession.

As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for you, O God. (Psalm 42:1)
      LORD, we all thirst for you; please help us so that we don't try to satisfy that thirst with anything less than you.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? (Psalm 42:2)
      Jesus, you know the number of my days, none of them are hidden from you. When I come before you at that latter day, let me be washed and cleansed by your blood.

My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, "Where is your God?" (Psalm 42:3)
      Lord Jesus, we grieve for the Episcopal Church and all those who have been led astray; come and rescue your flock -- so many are sheep without true shepherds.

When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast. (Psalm 42:4)
      Holy Spirit, help us join with joy and praise all those who keep that pilgrim feast. Thank you.

      Father, we know that we are surrounded by your angelic hosts and that whole company of heaven, that cloud of witnesses that has gone before us. Help us to be steady in you till we reach that place of rest. Thank you.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
      Father, guide us by your Holy Spirit so that every other "lord" in our lives is brought under the sovereign rule of Jesus and he becomes our one Lord. Thank you.

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins;
       Jesus, thank you for washing away my sins. Thank you for baptizing me with your Holy Spirit. Please help me to live day by day in the hope of the resurrection. Thank you.

       Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, please help us live in the hope of the resurrection and the life of the world to come. Thank you.

      "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less"

My hope is built on nothing less
      Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
No other source of strength I claim,
      But put my trust in Jesus' Name!

Refrain:
On Christ the solid Rock I stand;
      All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, his covenant, his blood
      Support me in the raging flood;
Though earthly hope be swept away,
      He then is all my hope and stay.

Refrain

When he shall come with trumpet sound;
      O may I then in him be found,
Clothed in his righteousness alone,
      Faultless to stand before the throne.

Refrain

And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD; it shall rejoice in his salvation. (Psalm 35:9)
      LORD, renew in us the joy of your salvation.

All my bones shall say, "LORD, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, yes, the poor and the needy from him who plunders him?" (Psalm 35:10)
      Jesus, be my strength today. I am weary and heavy laden. Help me speak of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long. (From Psalm 35:28)

But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them and deliver them; he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. (Psalm 37:39-40)
      A word received: That is the issue before my people: will they trust in me? I want my people to trust me. I AM.

Words receive for a Sunday School lesson in February:
For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. (John 3:34)
      A word received: I do not use an eye-dropper or a teaspoon to distribute my Holy Spirit. I pour out pools of living water.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11)
      A word received: I want to pour out my Holy Spirit on you and in you. I want you to be filled with the fire of my love for you. Come to me -- let me fill you up.

His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clean out his threshing floor, and gather his wheat into the barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (Matthew 3:12)
      A word received: The wheat will be gathered to me, the chaff will be burned. Look to me, turn to me, accept me as Lord and Savior. I do not desire the eath of any man. Do not be chaff. Be wheat, lead fruitful lives.

1/24/2008, #25, 1st Quarter 2008

They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. (Psalm 37:19)
      Lord Jesus, we are ashamed of the Episcopal Church and there is a famine of our word through much of it. Come and visit your faithful people with your Holy Spirit and we shall be satisfied.

But the wicked shall perish; and the enemies of the LORD, like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away. (Psalm 37:20)
      Jesus, we pray for those who have chosen to do evil in the Episcopal Church that even now you would turn their hearts to repentance.

The wicked borrows and does not repay, but the righteous shows mercy and gives. (Psalm 37:21)
      Jesus, help us give of ourselves to your kingdom purposes.

For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, but those cursed by Him shall be cut off. (Psalm 37:22)
      Father, you have set before us blessing and curses, life and death; help us by your Holy Spirit to choose life. (Deuteronomy 30:19)

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way. (Psalm 37:23)
      LORD, please help us walk in your way and bring delight to you.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the LORD upholds him with His hand. (Psalm 37:24)
      LORD, the Episcopal Church has fallen, but we pray in the hope that it is not utterly cast down and that your will uphold us with your hand.

I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread. (Psalm 37:25)
      Jesus, thank you for your provision for me and my family.

He is ever merciful, and lends; and his descendants are blessed. (Psalm 37:26)
      Holy Spirit, please help us show mercy so that our descendants will be blessed.

      Lord, please help us depart from evil, and do good; and dwell forevermore with you. For you love justice, and does not forsake your saints; they are preserved forever, but the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off. Please help the righteous shall inherit the Episcopal Church, and dwell in it forever. (From Psalm 37:27-29)

A word received: Come to me, turn to me; ask for the refreshment of my Holy Spirit. You are weary, rest in me.

I believe in one God,
      Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for being one and thank you for your love for one another. Please help me, help your people live in the reality of your unity and love. Thank you.
the Father Almighty,
      Father, thank you for being a father to me. Thank you that by your might you have made your son Jesus known to us so that we can become your children.
maker of heaven and earth,
      Thank you, Father, for your creation. Please help us by your Holy Spirit to be better stewards of your creation.
and of all things visible and invisible;
Thank you.
the only begotten Son of God,
      Father, thank you for sending your one and only son to us so that we might become your children.
begotten of his Father before all worlds,
      Jesus, you have always been there; help us receive you into every part of our lives.
God of God, Light of Light,
      Jesus, you are God and you are the light to take us through this time of darkness in the church. You are the word of God and are a lamp to our feet.
very God of very God,
      Jesus, you and the Father are one; please help us come to know you and him better.
begotten, not made,
      Father, thank you for choosing Mary to bring Jesus to us. Help us to respond as she did.
being of one substance with the Father;
      Jesus, you came to us bearing the image of the Father so that we might know his love for us. You are one with him and there is no division between you. Please help us by your Holy Spirit to know the unity and character that you share with the Father.
by whom all things were made;
      Jesus, everything we have was made by you, there is nothing that we can have that we can call our own except for your cross and resurrection. It is all a free gift of yours; thank you.
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven,
      Jesus, thank you for being willing to give up the glory of heaven to come and live with us. Thank you that day by day your Holy Spirit is willing to live in us in the midst of all our sin.
and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man;
      Holy Spirit, thank you for Mary's willingness to receive your over-shadowing and her willingness to risk all to bear Jesus for us.
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
      Thank you, Jesus, for what you endured on the cross for us.
he suffered and was buried;
      Jesus, thank you for dying for us while we were still sinners. You went to the cross and the grave for us because of your love for your father and for us. Thank you.
and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures,
      Holy Spirit, thank you that you enabled Jesus to rise from the dead. Thank you for his victory over sin and death. Please bring us to new life in him.
and ascended into heaven,
       Jesus, thank you for your ascension into heaven to sit at the right hand of your father. Thank you that you ever live to make intercession for us.
and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;
       Father, thank you for giving Jesus such a place of honor; please help us honor him by our words and deeds and belief.

and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead;
       Jesus, you are Lord and you are judge; help us to fall into your hands and not the hands of men.
whose kingdom shall have no end.
       Thank you, Jesus, for your endurance to the end on the cross. Thank you for establishing an eternal kingdom.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life,
       Father, we desperately need the renewing power of your Holy Spirit in the life of the Episcopal Church
who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;
       Holy Spirit, thank you for helping us know both the Father and the Son!
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified;
       Holy Spirit, please help us know you, worship you, and glorify you.
And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church;
       Holy Spirit, I believe that apostolic teaching which has been taught in all places and in all times. Thank you for the faith that you delivered to the saints. Help us to keep steady in your teaching and grace. Thank you.

My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to your word. (Psalm 119:25)
      LORD, we are trodden down into the dust in the Episcopal Church; please revive us according to your word.

I have declared my ways, and you answered me; teach me your statutes. (Psalm 119:26)
      Jesus, I have said that I will follow you wherever you lead me, and you have answered me by sending your Holy Spirit; please teach me your statutes.

Make me understand the way of your precepts; so shall I meditate on your wonderful works. (Psalm 119:27)
      Holy Spirit, please bring me to wisdom and understanding; help me, like Mary, to store your works in my heart and reflect on them.

My soul melts from heaviness; strengthen me according to your word. (Psalm 119:28)
      Father, so many of us in the Episcopal Church are weary and heavy laden, refresh us with your word and your spirit. Thank you.

LORD, who may abide in your tabernacle? Who may dwell in your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart; (Psalm 15:1-2)
      A word received: Pray for my people that they will walk uprightly in my grace, and speak the truth I plant in their hearts.

An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: there is no fear of God before his eyes. (Psalm 36:1)
      Jesus, our eyes have grown dull and our hearts have grown cold in the Episcopal Church; please give us a holy fear of offending you by our words and deeds.

For he flatters himself in his own eyes, when he finds out his iniquity and when he hates. (Psalm 36:2)
      Holy Spirit, we have confused good and evil in the Episcopal Church and think our sins are OK; have mercy on us and lead us back into the truth of your word.

The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; he has ceased to be wise and to do good. (Psalm 36:3)
      Father, we have become wise in our own eyes; lead us back to your truth.

He devises wickedness on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not abhor evil. (Psalm 36:4)
      Holy LORD, please help us abhor what is evil in your sight.

Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. (Psalm 36:5)
      Jesus, please let the continual dew of your mercy and grace fall on us: help us not receive what we deserve and help us receive what we do not deserve from you.

Your righteousness is like the great mountains; your judgments are a great deep; O LORD, you preserve man and beast. (Psalm 36:6)
      Preserve us, LORD, for your mercy is great.

How precious is your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of your wings. (Psalm 36:7)
      Jesus, please help us seek shelter under the shadow of your wings. (From Matthew 23:37)

They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your pleasures. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. (Psalm 36:8-9)
      Thank you!

      LORD, please take us to that river!

Subject: Welcome Home Initiative
Torre and Jean--
Please ask your Intercessors to continue to pray for the Welcome Home Initiative, a ministry of the Oratory of Christ the Healer which offers support, practical resources and healing prayer to combat veterans and their families.
God has been faithful in drawing support to the Welcome Home Initiative. We offer Him praise for generous gifts and encouragement from several venues.
+      Rejoice with us! Our first WHI retreat is planned for March.
+      A meeting with the NY National Guard will take place on Wednesday and prayers are asked for good mutual cooperation to continue to develop with their developing reintegration program.
+      Pray also for a positive outcome to come from contacts with the Regular Army Installation Chaplain's office at Fort Drum.
+      A meeting was also held earlier this month at the Veteran's Center in Albany to coordinate ministry with older Veterans from other conflicts. Pray for a good partnership to develop from this.
+      A retreat for the wives of servicemen in deployment is also being developed.
+      Continue to lift up the planning process, negotiations with the various strands of military administration, and for the raising up, equipping and training of intercessory and direct ministry volunteers.
A new weekly prayer meeting for the WHI is planned for Tuesdays at 1:15 p.m. in the Oratory Conference Room. Please come if you can, even if for only a few minutes.
Check out our web page at http://www.christ-the-king-center.org/WelcomeHome . If you are interested in supporting the Welcome Home Initiative as an intercessor or other volunteer minister or if you are a combat veteran desiring ministry, contact Sandra Lester at the Oratory, 518-692-9550, ext. 202.

***** People have asked how the prayer table ministry got started and how it is run. Here are some notes on it.
      The prayer table ministry was started 5 or 6 years ago by Larry and Jerusha Hubert in our parish.
      Our parish, Christ Church Schenectady NY, is in Hamilton Hill, the inner city of Schenectady.
      We set up a folding table in front of our church doors just next to the public sidewalk.
      This past summer we also had a table on Albany Street, more in the center of the Hill.
      We have learned over time to take almost everything off the table because people assumed that anything that looked like a bowl meant that you had to contribute if you wanted prayer.
      All I have on the table is a junior legal pad where I write down prayer requests, a bag of small wooden crosses and my pen. We tape a simple sign on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper to the front of the table which says, "+ Prayer Table +". We normally have four folding chairs: two for us who are praying and two for people to sit on while we pray for them. We keep it as low-tech as we possibly can.
      We ask people as they pass by and ask them if they want prayer for anything. If they do, we invite them to sit down. We take their hand and ask for their first name and what they want prayer for and write that down. Then we assure them that we will be praying for them all week.
      Often as people pass by on the other side of the street the Lord will prompt me to call out to them and ask them if they want prayer. Three of those on Saturday's list crossed the street to get prayer in response to our calling out to them.
      We have been told by people on the Hill that the prayer table has been a topic of discussion in the bars on the Hill.
      The first years we got about a 20% response rate of those walking by. This summer it moved up to 30%. Saturday we had a 50-60% positive response rate. We have become a known fixture on the Hill. It is clear that some people come to the location just to receive prayer.
      We try to not embarrass anyone; but we cheerfully call out to people.
      Another thing we learned is that three is the absolute maximum number of people praying you want to have (more than that and people are intimidated by the crowd) and two is best.
      In the Spring through Fall we usually do it for about two hours, now in the Winter when it is very cold we do it for about an hour.
      We tried offering free hot coffee and cocoa when it was bitter cold, but have stopped that as it didn't seem necessary. We want to keep our focus on prayer.
      It is one of the most exciting things we have ever done!

The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. (Psalm 9:9)
      Father, we flee to you, we cling to you; please stop the oppression in the Episcopal Church. All have gone astray and fallen short of your glory. Father, both liberals and conservatives are misusing their power; have mercy on us.

And those who know your name will put their trust in you; for you, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you. (Psalm 9:10)
      Jesus, your name is above every name and we put our trust in you; we know that you will not forsake those who seek you.

Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion! Declare his deeds among the people. (Psalm 9:11)
      Holy Spirit, please help us tell others of the renewal you have brought to our lives.
      Arise, O LORD, do not let man prevail; (Psalm 9:19a)

A word received: Look at the tragedy that comes to people because of the willful disobedience of the leaders of my people. That was true then and it is true now.

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, (Ephesians 4:1)
      Holy Spirit, please help us, as you helped Paul, to walk worthy of our calling.

with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, (Ephesians 4:2)
      Jesus, thank you for Bishop Bill's faithful and gentle witness yesterday.

endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:3)
      Father, please help us throughout this diocese to keep the unity of your Holy Spirit in the bond of peace and mutual affection.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; (Ephesians 4:4)
      Jesus, please help us live in the hope of our calling to be your visible body in the world.

one Lord, one faith, one baptism; (Ephesians 4:5)
      Father, please restore Jesus as the one Lord of the Episcopal Church. Please restore us to the faith in Jesus that was proclaimed at our baptisms.

one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (Ephesians 4:6)
      Father, please set the Episcopal Church free from the pantheism we heard proclaimed yesterday. You are the source of truth and light and by your word you have established right and wrong; help us walk by your light in your truth.

But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. (Ephesians 4:7)
      Jesus, please give all of us the gift of your grace to receive and believe the gospel. Thank you.

A word received: Cry out to me for my people.

Help us to respond as she did.
being of one substance with the Father;
      Jesus, you came to us bearing the image of the Father so that we might know his love for us. You are one with him and there is no division between you. Please help us by your Holy Spirit to know the unity and character that you share with the Father.
by whom all things were made;
      Jesus, everything we have was made by you, there is nothing that we can have that we can call our own except for your cross and resurrection. It is all a free gift of yours; thank you.
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven,
      Jesus, thank you for being willing to give up the glory of heaven to come and live with us. Thank you that day by day your Holy Spirit is willing to live in us in the midst of all our sin.
and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man;
      Holy Spirit, thank you for Mary's willingness to receive your over-shadowing and her willingness to risk all to bear Jesus for us.
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
      Thank you, Jesus, for what you endured on the cross for us.
he suffered and was buried;
Thank you that you ever live to make intercession for us.
and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;
       Father, thank you for giving Jesus such a place of honor; please help us honor him by our words and deeds and belief.

and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead;
       Jesus, you are Lord and your judge; help us to fall into your hands and not the hands of men.
whose kingdom shall have no end.
       Thank you, Jesus, for your endurance to the end on the cross. Thank you for establishing an eternal kingdom.

1/19/2008, #20, 1st Quarter 2008

Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And he found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. (John 2:13-14)
      Jesus, so many parishes have their attention fixed on money raising and property; have mercy on us. Please restore proclaiming the gospel to all parishes.

When he had made a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables. (John 2:15)
      Jesus, please come and do whatever is necessary to cleanse the parishes of the Episcopal Church and drive from among us all that defiles them.

And he said to those who sold doves, "Take these things away! Do not make my father's house a house of merchandise!" (John 2:16)
      Jesus, please restore your father's house to being a house of prayer for all people. (From Mark 11:17)

A word received: Yield this day to me.
A word received: You are in my care; come to me, turn to me.

Saturday: 110:1-5(6-7), 116, 117; Genesis 6:9-22; Hebrews 4:1-13; John 2:13-22

Notes from the Front Line

Bonnie Anderson, President of the Episcopal House of Deputies, will join speak today at St. Andrew's, Albany (Saturday, January 19) for a program entitled "'Can we talk?': Faith and Diversity in the Episcopal Church." Bishop William Love will celebrate and preach at a 1 PM Eucharist. At 2 PM, there will be a meeting with her in St. Andrew's Carmichael Hall, where Bonnie will speak on the polity of the Episcopal Church.
      [Note from Torre: I urge as many intercessors as can to attend the meeting at St. Andrews Albany at 1 pm and support Bishop Bill with fervent prayer. Pray that Jesus will be known as the way, the truth, and the life at this meeting. Our job as intercessors is NOT to engage in political statements, but to stand in the gap and pray. A few may be called to speak, but our primary calling from God is to pray and intercede. If you cannot attend, please spend the hours from 1 - 3 in earnest prayer.]

1/18/2008, #19, 1st Quarter 2008

Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; (Hebrews 3:12)
      LORD, there are many such people in the Episcopal Church; have mercy on us and draw them back to you.

but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (Hebrews 3:13)
      Jesus, we cry out to you for those who have led astray by the deceitfulness of sin.

For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, (Hebrews 3:14)
      Holy Spirit, please help us to be steadfast with confidence in Jesus till the end.

while it is said: "Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." (Hebrews 3:15)
      Father, we long to hear your voice, yet our hearts have grown hard and cold in the Episcopal Church; have mercy on us. Thank you.

A word received: Do not be afraid when the times are evil. Keep your attention on me -- I AM mighty to save.
