Now they came to Jericho. As he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. (Mark 10:46)
Lord Jesus, we pray for all those who sit by the wayside begging because of their blindness: open the eyes of the physically blind, and open the hearts of and minds of the spiritually blind.
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:47)
Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on those who cannot see you and know you.
Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:48)
Holy Spirit, help your people ignore all those whose only desire is to be undisturbed; help your little ones by the wayside cry out to Jesus all the more.
So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, "Be of good cheer. Rise, he is calling you." (Mark 10:49)
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns!" (Isaiah 52:7) Holy Spirit, help us to be bearers of the good news that Jesus is calling people to himself.
And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. (Mark 10:50)
Father, please help us throw aside anything that hinders our coming to Jesus.
So Jesus answered and said to him, "What do you want Me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "Rabboni, that I may receive my sight." (Mark 10:51)
Holy Spirit, plant such a request in the hearts and minds of the leaders and teachers of the Episcopal Church. Grant that they will receive their sight. Help me where I am walking in darkness to receive my sight.
Then Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road. (Mark 10:52)
Jesus, help us make the choice of Bartimaeus: to follow you wherever you go.
Lord, this is a time of great blindness in your church and there are many in your church of whom you spoke about through your prophet Isaiah: "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20) Have mercy on your people, Jesus, and let the blind see!
A word received: Come to me, my people, come to me. Ask for my blessing.
