10/4/2013, #4, 4th Quarter 2013

Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him, saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented." And Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him." The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." (Matthew 8:5-9)
      Holy Spirit, help all of us in this diocese come to understand (and live out) what it means to be under the authority of Jesus and have him as Lord of our lives.

When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 8:10-12)
      Jesus, bring us to this same kind of faith as the centurion had where we will truly trust you to hear and act on our prayers.

Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that same hour. (Matthew 8:13)
      Father, we pray for the healing ministry throughout this diocese:
            let the blind see,
            the lame walk,
            the lepers and the unclean be cleansed,
            the deaf hear,
            the dead be raised,
            the poor have the gospel preached to them,
      and we are blessed because we are not offended by the way Jesus does things (see Matthew 11:5-6).

      Lord Jesus Christ, I pray for your suffering church, for those who will die today because of their faith in you. Give them strength to endure to the end. Thank you.

A word received: Cry out to me in hope and faith as the centurion did.
