5/9/2014, #20, 2nd Quarter 2014
Christ in me, the hope of glory.
Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. (Colossians 2:4-5)
Jesus, let that same Spirit of truth and steadfastness that Paul spoke of be among all the congregations of this diocese.
And God spoke all these words, saying: (Exodus 20:1)
Holy Spirit, please give us ears to hear and hearts to respond to what is being said to us.
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. (Exodus 20:2)
Jesus, thank you for the new Exodus which you have accomplished to bring us out of bondage to sin.
You shall have no other gods before Me. (Exodus 20:3)
Father, please help us recognize and repent of giving homage to every false god this world offers.
"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. (Exodus 20:4-6)
Holy Spirit, please help us repent of bowing down to any man-made object.
"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. (Exodus 20:7)
Holy Trinity, One God, help us repent of misusing your name.
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:8-11)
Father, help us keep one day in seven holy and set apart for your purposes.
"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12)
LORD, I struggle with this one. Help me honor my father and mother in word and deed. I pray for all those young men and women I meet at the prayer table who have never know a parent's love. LORD, be a Father to the fatherless.
"You shall not murder. (Exodus 20:13)
Jesus, I live in a city where people are daily murdered in body, mind and spirit by the use of drugs. Have mercy on us.
"You shall not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)
Lord, adultery is held us as something to emulate in our society. Have mercy on us.
"You shall not steal. (Exodus 20:15)
Stealing and scams have become the norm in our society. Have mercy on us.
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (Exodus 20:16)
Jesus, help us daily speak the truth with your love.
"You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's." (Exodus 20:17)
Holy Spirit, covetousness is the whole base for the advertising we see. Help us shut our eyes and close our ears to all the false blandishments we see on TV or the internet. Thank you.
Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned." (Matthew 4:12-16)
Jesus, there is so much darkness in the church and in our society. Let your light dawn upon us and renew us by your Holy Spirit.
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 4:17)
Father, bring us to that repentance whereby we shall enter your kingdom and rejoice in your presence. Thank you.
A word received: Keep looking to me in hope and expectation for what I will do.
A word received: My word is your food.
A word received: Rest in me. I will lead you.
