2018 04 19

Pray for a speedy recovery from surgery for Bishop Dan Herzog and strength and rest for his wife Carol.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' " Matthew 4:1-4 (NKJV)
Jesus, when the tempter comes to us, help us respond as you did by turning to your word in Scripture.

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' " Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.' " Matthew 4:5-7 (NKJV)
Father, protect us from the folly of tempting you.

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.' " Matthew 4:8-10 (NKJV)
Holy Spirit, please help us worship you and the Father and Jesus alone and serve only you and them. Guide us into the intimate fellowship you have with the Father and the Son.

Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. Matthew 4:11 (NKJV)
LORD, let you holy angels minister to us as well. Thank you.

that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, Colossians 2:2 (NKJV)
Holy Spirit, encourage us and bring us into a close knit fellowship with your saints.

And God spoke all these words, saying: "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Exodus 20:1-2 (NKJV)
LORD, thank you for bringing us out of bondage.

You shall have no other gods before Me. Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)
Father, help us as Jesus did to worship you.

"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. Exodus 20:4-6 (NKJV)
Jesus, set us free from every form of idolatry.

"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Exodus 20:7 (NKJV)
Holy Trinity, One God, help us bring honor to your name.

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11 (NKJV)
LORD, renew in us a reverence for the Sabbath.

"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12 (NKJV)
Holy Spirit, help me honor my parents and all those who have been my spiritual parents.

"You shall not murder. Exodus 20:13 (NKJV)
Lord, free this nation from murder and killing and worshiping guns.

"You shall not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14 (NKJV)
Holy Spirit, help us keep the vows we have made.

"You shall not steal. Exodus 20:15 (NKJV)
Father, set our hands to honest work.

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Exodus 20:16 (NKJV)
Jesus, let my "Yea be yea" and my "Nay be nay".

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's." Exodus 20:17 (NKJV)
Jesus, set us free from being swayed by envy and greed and the advertisements that inundate us. Thank you.

A Word Received: Rejoice in my commandments and honor them.

Prayer Table/Jail Report, St. Ann's Amsterdam, April 16, 2018
DCN ALAN and DCN MARYCAROL -- The Prayer Table ministry and the ministry of Services From the Reserved Sacrament at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility went extremely well again this past Monday, April 16. We would like to relay to you prayer warriors what went on and how people were touched by God.
Prayer Table -- Once again, James Bryant and Alan held the table indoors in the Parish Hall. Despite heavy rain, about 20 people came and enjoyed the opportunity for anointing and prayer, the free non-perishable food we offer and the free, clean used (sometimes new!) clothing we offer. CORDELIA, LYDIA and CONSUELA all came for individual prayer.
Montgomery County Correctional Facility -- We (we deacons plus Anne DeGroff) were delighted this evening that three women came to their service. (The last two Mondays, no women chose to attend.) We also had 22 men come to the three services in their pods. We sensed a real theme of camaraderie this evening; the men, especially, instead of asking for prayer for themselves asked for prayer for the blessings of their fellow inmates. There were also plenty of prayer concerns for family members back home whom, of course, they miss. Our discussions of the readings of the day (third Sunday of Easter) were very productive. We talked quite a while about the need to forgive and be forgiven. One man (Germain) asked for God to give him the gift of making good decisions when he is released later this week. He is going back home to Syracuse and is eager to star life anew there. Another man (Esteban) asked for prayer for Jesus to watch over him. Next week he is transferring to a state facility to finish up his sentence before returning home in 30 days. The following inmates asked for your prayers for themselves and for those noted: Harry (and Marybeth), Boyd (and Alexia, Elle and Patricia), Michael, Eric (and family and the Fort Johnson Fire Dept.), Daniel (for children and families affected by gas attacks in Syria), David (and Trisha), Carlos (and Rhonda), Christian, Daniel (and family), Anthony (and family), John (and Sara), Anthony (and the Flores family), Dylan, Nelson, Dante (and Jarey and Montana), Luis, Jose, Pedro (and family), Anna (and Mike and all the sick and suffering in the world), Amy (and her children and her fiancĂ©.)
